Stephen Gniel – Chief Executive Officer, Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
Stephen’s education career spans more than 20 years in the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria as a teacher, principal and system leader.
In September 2020, Stephen was appointed to the role of VCAA Chief Executive Officer as part of
changes to meet the Victorian Government’s priorities. This included delivering on the government’s commitment to support the Year 12 ‘class of 2020’ to successfully finish their studies and graduate before the end of the year and transition to their pathways beyond school.
Stephen was previously Deputy Secretary, School Education Programs and Support Group (SEPS) at the Department of Education and Training and prior to that was the Acting Deputy Secretary, Regional Services Group. Prior to assuming Deputy Secretary roles, Stephen was Regional Director, South East Victoria with responsibility for more than 400 government schools with collective enrolments of more than 250,000 students, a position he held from 2016.
Stephen holds a Bachelor of Education, Master of Business Administration and has further study through both Harvard University, the Australia New Zealand School of Governance Executive Fellowship Program and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is also the National President of the Australian Council for Educational Leaders.
Stephen remains committed to actively contributing to improvements in education for the benefit of children and young people as well as for society at large and our collective communities.
